Gravel route on S Left Hd Blacksmith, Hyrum, Cache County, Utah

"Their are a few stretches of this route that are paved and have little shoulder room. The first 5-7 miles headed up blacksmith fork canyon , and the 4-6 miles riding into meadowville if you can time the start of your ride at a good time traffic shouldn’t be a huge issue. Camping at the rest area on the south side of the lake has electricity and toilets as well as a nice grassy area to set up your tent. WARNING as of 08/24 water is testing for 3x safe levels of manganese, so you’ll have to ride into garden city for fresh water. Also the sprinkler system goes off at 3 am so have your rain fly on lol. First day headed to the lake is a simple up and down . The return journey has way more climbing and couple hike a bike sections depending on your skill level. Gravel roads are mark well enough but a physical map is supper helpful. It’s a popular area for quads and campers so supportive strangers were always stopping to offer water and food. Overall fun but the elevation changes on day two can be mentally taxing."

SBT VRTL SLC RED

Gravel route on E 300 S, Hyrum, Cache County, Utah

"71 miles, 6729’ vertical  Same as the Green route with an extra trip up to (almost) Monte Cristo, which means “high.” Buff gravel. Rowdy descent down 060 into Hardware Ranch. No resupply but lots of springs.  Stuff to know: Pretty much all the same things as the Green. Be aware of ATV, 4x, and dirt bike traffic. Have fun! SBT VRTL SLC BLACK

Gravel route on E 300 S, Hyrum, Cache County, Utah

"Yes, it’s only two miles longer and with 600’ more climbing, but this is the adventurest route. Exact same route as the Black until the turnoff for New Canyon Road. It dives down FR 0214 and then rises up to Monument Peak REALLY steeply. This one hurts. There will be hike-a-bike. After Monument Peak, like, immediately, the downhill gets super-gnarly. Exercise caution: this is where you can get very broken. There are cattle gates throughout that you will have to open and close behind you. A lot of it counts as a road only in the barest sense. But the views from Monument Peak in particular are nuts. You’ll be able to see Bear Lake to the north and Wyoming to the East, and the Wasatch Back to the south and west. The ridgeline descent to Randolph is fast and features a lot of potential hike-a-bike up steep, punchy inclines. Droppers recommended. Resupply at Randolph and then make fun of the Black Route riders when you join them for the grind up Old Canyon Road.  Stuff to know: lights might be a good option here, since the route gets rowdy enough that a mechanical could keep you out until after dark. You are totally on your own between the start and Randolph, so ride accordingly. Big tires with low pressure, dropper, suspension, none of it hurts. There is a LOT of water on the route but it will all need filtered to get rid of the cow poo. Enjoy, don’t forget to close the gates Source: https://ridewithgps.com/collections/3259?privacy_code=ugaSfagTZ6jH2NOm Credit: Thank you @saltyandstupidcycling and Bobby Kennedy for the routes!"

SBT VRTL SLC BLUE

Gravel route on E 300 S, Hyrum, Cache County, Utah

"99.4 miles, 8284’ vertical  Same as the Blue until Bug Lake, when it heads to Randolph. You’ll see pretty much every ecosystem in Utah except salt flats. Starts in the creek bottom in Left Hand Fork and rises up to the ridges. Mountain valleys covered in sagebrush, climbs through Aspen groves, then down through sandy redrock mesas to Randolph along New Canyon Road. Road into Randolph is rolling and fast fast fast. Get a burger at Crawford’s Trough on Main St. (they have vegan and gluten-free options, too) and then head back to the reservoir for the insanely long climb up Monte Cristo, with 15 miles of sustained climbing from sage all the way to evergreen alpine ecosystems with stretches hitting 20% grade. It will murder you and then laugh about it. No resupply except at Randolph. There’s a functioning convenience store and Crawford’s. The descent from the top of Monte Cristo to Hardware is fast and rowdy.  Stuff to know: beware big water traps. Bring knobs. Make sure your brake pads are up to snuff, because it’s a loooong way down from the top of Monte Cristo. Also, the Asparagus Spears at Crawford Trough are to die for. Make sure you bring bug spray, because the mosquitoes on Old Canyon Road are fierce and you won’t be moving fast enough to avoid them. SBT VRTL SLC GREEN

Gravel route on E 300 S, Hyrum, Cache County, Utah

"51 miles, 4499’ vertical  Stiff but quick climb up Blacksmith Fork Canyon, which is bonkers pretty, and then a turn up equally-scenic and well-shaded Left Hand Fork. Left up Herd Hollow and onto the Great Western Trail to descend to Laketown Road and toward Hardware Ranch and the finishing pavement back to the start down Blacksmith.  Stuff to know: narrow shoulder up Blacksmith, but the locals are used to bikes and amazing. There is no resupply. Bring everything. Everything is high up, so bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent. It’s pretty shaded down below and well-trafficked in general. The Left Hand Fork gravel can be kinda chunky but the Laketown and Hardware gravel are amazing. Left Hand Fork - Herd Hollow Down

Gravel route from FR 047 to FR 245, Hyrum, Cache County, Utah

"Nice route along Left Hand Fork of the Blacksmith Fork River from Herd Hollow down to the pavement. A bit rocky in places. You can ride Left Hand Fork road above Herd Hollow, but you eventually get to some major rock slides over the road and it's either turn around or hike-a-bike from there to the top of Left Hand Fork."

Gravel route from FR 047 to FR 047, Hyrum, Cache County, Utah

"Herd Hollow from the 4-way intersection to Left Hand Fork. Generally good, but can get beat up from the cows and erosion. A few steeper, rocky sections toward the bottom near the Left Hand Fork Road."
